Post subject:  Should I swap my original PS3 for a PS3 Slim?

OK, so today my friend's 60 GB PS3 more or less kicked the bucket today (Blu-Ray drive is fried). I have a 20 GB PS3, which is identical in hardware aside from having no wireless internet. Anyways, I suggested he get his PS3 fixed then sell it off, hopefully to get enough money to buy a PS3 Slim. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my PS3 (trading it for a Slim, but mine actually works :)), as I have a perfectly fine PS2 and would rather have the piece of mind of a new PS3 (I got mine used). I've been looking into the PS3 Slim, and the problems I've been reading abount aren't as commonly heard as drives/lasers dying and YLODs.

So what do you guys think? Trade it in or keep it?

1. Is wireless THAT important to you?

2. Could you live without a PS2, considering that since they stopped making 20/60GB machines, there is no backwards compatability in the PS3 anymore.

3. What kind of trade-in price you looking at getting?

I dunno but PS3 slim feels like a cheap piece of crap and I'd much rather have the original.

PS2 doesn't upscale to HD.

Hum... Good things include the fact that you would get a new warranty, wireless, bigger HD.

Bad, no HD PS2 games (if thats important to you).

If you think yes then make sure you pay no more than about 20 quid/50 bucks after trade.

No yes or no clicked because I need more info.

For some reason, I thought he was planning on using the PS2 as an extra item when trading his PS3 Phat. You know, kinda PS2+PS3Phat = PS3Slim kinda thing.

Its too early for me to read shit properly. :D

There are some valid points here, I think...though I think for my friend some of them may not be worth as much. He's kinda done playing PS2 games, so really that functionality is kinda moot for him. For me I still play PS2 games, but again I have a PS2 and he doesn't. Wireless isn't that big of a deal for me, as I just got a long ethernet cable to play online, though the added convenience is nice.

If Sony actually fully warrantied the system after repair (rather than just having a warranty for the repair itself) it would be alot nicer! That's kinda what struck us as odd, especially since we have launch units...ones that run hotter and louder (in general) that the rest. (My PS3, for example, gets crazy hot! We're talking nearly Xenon 360 level here!) That's what's really getting me right now: both our systems are old and reportedly prone to failure. Conversely, the Slim is still a fairly new piece of kit, where as the 80/160 models have been around for years, which suggests they might be more reliable...

The general process would be to sell on the classifieds, hopefully wrangle up enough cash and buy a Slim, as we'd get alot more money I think. Sometimes I see people actually selling their Slims, so maybe I could work out a trade, though I think I'd only trade for it if it had a receipt.

If it's a release one, then why not ebay it?

I'm pretty sure the ones that had the PS2 BC still go for crazy money.

trade yours for a 40/80 PS3 fat if your worried about it failing. While the slims are a bit more powerful they just look like they're going to fall apart and you don't get the cool touch sensors for power and eject.
