okay, imagine the situation.

The Federation and a bunch of rebels are at war in space. The rebels are a heavily equipped and highly organised military coup on a grand scale (manned entirely by space racists) and the Federation has all but fallen, with one desperate last stand that seems hopeless being prepared. You are one lone federation cruiser that has made it out of a horrific battle with data that can save the federation. It is entirely up to you to make it through 8 sectors of space by jumping from jump beacon to jump beacon across known space (and unknown space), making contact with a bunch of other alien races, some friendly, some most definately not, and avoiding/killing/beating up pirates, finding technology, gaining scrap to purchase upgrades, crew, fuel, ammo and weapons for your desperately undermanned and under equipped beaten up decomissioned and only just out of mothballs cruiser, and hoping to build alliances to help the Federation (read, unlocking extra ships to play with by completing certain quest chains).

Couple this with the fact that all the gameplay is an overview of your ship, with your crew running about on it. You have direct control over where your crew go to, and if the systems are damaged in a room, they'll fix it. If there's a hull breach, they'll patch it. IF there's a fire, they'll put it out. If there are boarders there, they'll fight them. If there's no danger and the systems are fine, they'll man them and use them to give you bonuses to that particular system. You manage power from the reactor, you target locations on enemy ships to fire at, you select jump points, you experience the random events and quests that pop up, your crew gain experience in whatever they're doing and get better at it with successive exposure.

You won't regret it. There is a total of 9 ships to play as, and two layouts for each, each with a nice new paitjob, different starting crew, different equipment and systems and placements of rooms and airlocks and such, and different weapons loadouts too.

So that's 18 different challenges to start the game with. you start with one (the Kestrel), and unlock the extra layouts by completing 2 of the 3 ship specific achievements for each ship. You can also unlock extra ships by completing certain quest chains in the game you might happen across.

Word of advice, the game is hard as balls and punishingly so. You can only Save+Quit if you want to save, the savegame is tucked away too. Treat it like a Roguelike. It is a LOT of fun and has such great character too. I cannot recommend it enough.
