the leafs and penguins both got exactly what they needed out of this deal. The leafs got a good young player, with potential, and the pens got a good winger to add some scoring depth

the leafs had no intention of resigning poni in July. He doesn't fit the mold for burke's team, an he would cost too much to keep around

The Leafs got rid of their second best offensive threat (and let's face it, they're not much of a threat on offense OR defense) for a guy who's only played 9 NHL games and some other poofter.

I'll completely deny I was upset if this turns out great for them, but until that happens...

Edit for Smokey:

Alexei Ponikarovsky - LW goes to the Pens

Luca Caputi - LW & Martin Skoula - D go to the Leafs

Now the Leafs traded Skoula to the Devils for a 5th Round Draft pick in 2010. Though that's probably for the best...

I totally misread you there. I thought the Penguins were getting two guys and you were getting Alexei. Confused the hell out of me 'cause I didn't remember having Alexei.

There's no question at all who got the better player right now out of the deal. Pittsburgh wins the now, by a landslide. But, that's not what the Leafs were looking for. The had no intention of resigning Ponikarovsky for the term he wanted, and decided it made the most sense to flip him for an asset knowing that. Caputi is a good young prospect, so I anticipate he'll do well, though likely not immediately. He will however, be in the lineup tonight for the Leafs.

As for Skoula. We didn't want him. The only reason the Leafs took him is to provide the Pens the cap space to fit Ponikarovsky in. Our guys felt Skoula was tradable, and our scouts really like what they've seen in Caputi so they felt comforable doing the deal. Skoula was then flipped for a pick. So, Poni, for Caputi and 5th. Solid for a guy who'll only be around another month.

Finally, the Leafs defense is drastically underrated. We've been largely victimized by poor and inconsistent goaltending this year, and we have shown signs, (outside of the dismally uninspired effort against Carolina the other night) that we have turned a corner with Giguere in net for us. We shall see, but right now, it's team defense that's killing us, not our D itself. Meaning forwards contributing on the backcheck and whatnot.

^When I said defensive threat, I meant as a complete package (including goaltending/forwards getting back). I actually love the Leafs defensemen.

I know this is probably better for them in the long run, but...

I liked Ponikarovsky. Sad to see him go. :(

I can't believe none of you bums have posted for the playoffs.

Fuck you, New Jersey. I knew you'd choke. AGAIN. Though why you had to let Philly through...

Goddammit, Boston, just put the fucking Sabres away. I can't count on you guys (as in all of New England, not just the Bruins) for anything except being massive douchers.

Blackhawks, you guys scared me pretty bad. There's no way you should have had to come from behind to win that game in OT. Those 2nd and 3rd goals should never have happened.

C'mon Pittsburgh and Phoenix!

And oh my God, Boyle. I know you're trying to downplay what happened and get over it, but DAMN, in a playoff game? There's no way you won't feel like shit up until this round is over. Or if Colorado wins, then you've got all summer to live with that. I do not envy you, sir.

In non-NHL news, many congratulations are in order for the US U-18 team that took gold against Belarus. National heroes get.

And fuck you, Milwaukee Admirals (read: Buttpirates). You're a major reason why I want the Predators to tank. Calling up one of our players in the middle of playoffs when we're not even in your system, but the team we're playing is. That's really fucking shady, and I have no idea how that's even allowed. Screw over your own farm team, don't shit on us too just because our affiliates suck too much to be in the playoffs.

No more Caps in playoffs. So much for Ovechkin.

Man, best hockey game I've ever seen was the Australlia vs. Germany 2010 world final, absolutely intense.

I can't wait 'til October. First season of AHL hockey here in Charlotte, and we'll be seeing a lot of traffic between our team and the Hurricanes in Raleigh. Not only that, but we finally get to screw with an ECHL team and see what it's like from the other side. :D
