Yesterday went computer shopping with the grandparents. There old vista computer was slow as hell and it was time for an upgrade. So I showed them the chromebook. Since my grandma only uses a computer to do banking, check emails, and google things why does she need a desktop or laptop? So this was perfect for them. At first we looked at windows 8 computers but since explaining the simple computer things to my grandma confuses her windows 8 would have been really hard to explain. We also got a new wireless printer/eprinter to go with the chromebook and a wireless mouse.
The Chromebook is really easy to use and for just simple internet browsing it is pretty neat. I like it a lot and for $250 bucks you can't beat that. Samsung did a really good job.
So anybody on here ever tried a chromebook/ owns one?

I've not, but I do like it when companies realise that there's a market for basic, simple, easy-to-use tech and they actually make something the not-too-computer-literate can use.

Hell, its something my parents could do with, and they're stuck with Vista and Win7 respectively. Something like a Chromebook would suit them down to the ground.

Where did you go shopping? Did any of the douchey salespeople try getting them to buy really expensive shit like they usually do? That pisses me off does that.

We went to staples. The sales people didn't try to get us to buy expensive stuff at all. The sales woman knew I knew my tech so she went with what I was saying. She just helped us get the product and put stuff up at the front. The assistant manager did get my grandma to get 1 year of insurance on which really isn't that bad. I mean you never know what is gonna happen with the chromebook so it was a good call to get it for 1 year.

if you wanna know this is the chromebook my grandparents got. http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/chro ... 3C12-A01US
What is pretty cool about it is you can get 3G for it and use it whenever. Oh! BTW, chromebooks are only able to print using google cloud print. So you need to get an eprinter or you can get it to use a classic printer as google calls it but you need a computer with windows on it and connect it that way.

LOL insurance.

All goods are automatically covered for 12 months from purchase for mechanical breakdown, and after that, you'd need an extended warranty.

For damage caused by drops, etc, that's covered by all home insurance.

So they actually paid for insurance they were legally entitled to for free.

Other than that, not a bad deal I guess!

The computer is covered for 1 year. Not the printer. But yeah. Damages, drops, etc... it will be replaced for free.

Trust me, you buy anything like that from a store, its covered against faults for at least 12 months. Remember the RROD thing, where MS acknowledged they HAD to replace machines that were faulty?

Its not quite the Sale Of Goods act, but its similar to it. Can't remember the exact name, but buying insurance for anything like computers, printers, TVs, etc, is a waste of money if you have insurance for your home/contents, and if the item purchased is new.

Again, trust me. Its my kind of area. ;)

It is covered for 12 months by default? So my grandparents really have 2 years of coverage?

If they bought 1 year's worth of insurance, then its covered from today until one year from now.

But the thing is, if they have insurance for their home and contents, then they have just bought insurance they already have.

See, its like this:

Machine has a fault or breaks down or a part malfunctions or some part of the actual item stops working due to a fault in itself - covered under the Sales Of Goods act (or the US equivalent that MS had to accept, causing them to repair RRODs for free).

Machine gets dropped or stepped on or drinks spilled on - covered under the home/contents insurance (most likely anyways - provided they HAVE home/contents insurance).

The insurance that is sold by places like this is basically pointless. Home insurance won't cover for breakdowns or faults (but Sales Of Goods does), and Sales Of Goods won't cover for accidental damage caused by the owner (but home insurance does), so you see... its not really needed. If you wanna fuck with the sales people, then ask them what the extra insurance covers for that either the Sales Of Goods or your home insurance doesn't, and you'll find they just go "um.. um.. um.. but insurance!".

ANYWAYS...

That whole needing a specific printer sounds a little rubbish. Are the specific printers expensive, or are they just normal printers that any machine can use, but also coded for Chromebooks?

it is just a normal printer any computer can use nothing special. It is just that Chrome OS is web based and the only way to print is by google cloud print. So the printer just needs e-print. You can even do the same with google chrome. The printer we got was $100 HP printer. It can fax, make copies, scan things to the computer via USB and wifi I am pretty sure didn't check that out yet and it has as I said before wifi and e-print. What e-print is if you don't know is once the printer is hooked up to the network you go and regester it on the printer comanies website and it will give you an email for the printer. That email is how you print using google cloud print and with that email you can use that printer from anyplace in the world as long as the printer is on and you have that email and are using cloud print. it is pretty cool.
check it out here. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2404921,00.asp

I know right? Though, anybody who has that email can hook themselves up to the printer. So say you got one and one of us found out the email to the printer we could have a field day printing stuff on your printer.
