Yeah, because I wouldn't want to steal because a) large risk b) might hurt normal people depending on who you steal from.. =) Piracy isn't stealing, but in a way you affect the income of a huge corporation. Which many things do. For example, driving a fuel efficient car makes the oil corporations make less money. I don't hear anyone bitching about people using too little gas. Printing digital photos make photo shops that develop photo lose money, and many go bankrupt. "Adapt", people say. Noone thinks of this badly either.

What you do is obtaining goods for free by circumventing security measures, when what you SHOULD be doing is paying for it.

That, sir, is stealing.

Obtaining goods by means other than designed.

No, and if you think so you're as retarded as those who vote for Bush. Let me explain by using an example.

Theft: A has a car. B steals said car. B now has the car, A has no car.
Piracy: A has a car. B copies the car. Both A and B now have an identical car.

There's a difference, and the difference is that piracy does not remove the original. You do not take something away from someone else. A company might lose a potential sale, but it's not that black and white either, because often you'd not buy it anyway. Take Photoshop for an example. You probably possess an illegal copy. You wouldn't pay the £500 for a legit copy or whatever it costs, so you haven't lost them a sale; you'd simply turn to a cheap alternative, such as GIMP.

Also, studies show that people who pirate are more likely than others to buy products of the same medium than other people. In other words: piracy is beneficial to the industry. Might not apply too well to games.. but well to music and films.

LOL. This is where I show my double standards....

Photoshop - yes, I own an "obtained" copy. But I refuse to pay £500 for a piece of software that is only slightly different to the last version.

Games - paying £30-£40 for a game is reasonable, and there is a lot of work goes into each and every different one of them.

You wouldn't pay £200 to go to the cinema, so I don't see why you should pay £500 for a piece of software.

However, taking your equation into another context....

Person A purchases a piece of software. Person B purchases the same software. Both people have the software, and the company has been reimbursed.

Person A purchases a piece of software. Person B copies said software. Both people have the software, and the company has effectively delivered 2 copies of the software but only been paid for 1.

If you and a friend walked into a shop and picked up a can of Cola each, you paid for yours and your friend didn't, what do you expect would happen?

You got the drinks from the same place, the same source, its just one paid for it and one didn't.

At the end of the day, software piracy is illegal. This ain't my decision. This is the law. Obtaining a saleable product by means other than actually paying for it is wrong. End of.

I tend to download tv series that I've missed (or that have been out in the US for 6 years before we get them...) but I always buy them when they do finally come out on dvd.

I will not, however, buy photoshop. Ever.

I never argued if it's illegal or not, I just said it's not theft. If you buy a can of coke and steal another one, then that removes one original copy. So you took two from the original owner, paid for one. In the first example, the company delivered one product. The customer copied it himself. Only one copy was ever removed from its original copy, and this was paid for.

I also understand the notion of supporting the development, but it's quite futile with most software as most devs are large corporations (plus, the devs don't get much of the money - it's much better if you pirate the software and donate to the developer, this way they'll make a much larger profit, AND you'll actively discourage publishers).

It's like that advert on DVDs

"You wouldn't steal a car"
No I wouldn't, a car has cost someone more than a few grand.

Then it goes on about piracy.
I've cost a company what £2 tops.

Oh and btw Zavvi sale is over, everything is back to old price :(

Basically, $2 = £1.

I got MGS4 for £29.99 and the limited edition Assassins Creed for £19.99. Also picked up the GTA4 guide for £4.98.
