CES 2014 kicked off and we are already getting some new info on steam machines.

Seems like a good start to CES this year! I am excited for steam machines and I hope we get to see some of them in action. If I missed anything just post it below. I am sure to have missed some stuff.

Any wearable tech seems a waste to me. I dont think it can do much than a phone cannot except track body movements...

I think Intel's Jarvis is pretty neat, but I doubt I'd have much of a use for it.

Steam machines are already overrated, unnecessary garbage.

And Gabe Newell is still the biggest blowhard in the industry.

I agree. Valvedrones think they're getting cutting-edge tech, when they're really just getting a name-brand desktop computer.

HOWEVER----I do want either this one or this one for work travel because my laptop sucks donkey dick for gaming. These are nicely portable and I could connect them to an hdtv in the room, and I've been looking for something with decent performance in this size.

Just saying, Gigabyte sells an i7 based machine in a similar form factor.

The sales thus far are quite impressive. I'm loving both consoles. Just wait til these systems actually get released into all markets. The Xbox One for instance is only available in 13 countries right now.

And nitpicking surely, but I read 4.2m PS4s

Yeah, you're right, dunno where that typo came from.

Ps4 isn't even out in Japan as well, I think? Obviously a big market for Sony.

I hear the PS4 JPN release coincides with the "everyone with a PS4 automatically gets the FFXIV beta, regardless" release in Feb.

Should be... interesting...

I think the steam machine is interesting, albeit un-necessary.

So Gabe Newell wants people to shift from a highly fragmented platform (PC), to a platform which is largely the same and somewhat fragmented already, then expect console owners to forget the new gen AND then claim that this is for the good of gamers. No Gabe, it is not. It's for the good of your company's licensing revenue. You aren't competing with consoles you assclown, you are merely competing with the existing market for your existing software outlet. Stop kidding people that you are competing with consoles you fat prick, people buy consoles because every game released on that platform for 6 or 7+ years will work.

And don't get me started on that controller. I don't need it, and I don't want it.

Steam machines is bringing pc gaming to the living room. They are making it "console" factor and you can actually upgrade these consoles. Some of the steam machines are super powerful and would be great to invest in. Now, why not just buy a PC? Well, the average person that isn't tech savvy is going to think this a video game console and not as a PC and the same goes for the PC. Most people don't think of it is as a video game system. This comes with a controller that is like using a keyboard and mouse. A lot of people don't realize that you can hook up a controller to a PC and play games with it so since this has a controller people can pick up games and understand how to use this just like the consoles that are on the market today. Since we are all tech savvy on this site we think this is stupid since majority of us has a gaming PCexcept Carl because he is a chumpSo steam machines would be pointless but you have to think for the average person. Now, if you were the consumer you would have to think about buyer investment. Sure, some of these steam machines are expensive but PC games are cheaper than console games and you don't have to go out and buy them so that saves you with gas and prices of some newer games and then all them steam sales where you can literally save hundreds of dollars on games each sale and they stay in your list forever once you buy them so you don't have to trade in games. Sure, that is a bummer for people but the developer gets money when a PC game is purchased and not just the store that someone bought it from it if wasn't new.

So, my point is in the long run over a 7 year period you are really saving money going with steam machine over a Xbox or playstation. So steam machines are really worth it and with all those manufacturers behind it already I can see this actually being a big deal in the console market and I hope this actually puts pressure on Microsoft and Sony. I would add nintendo to the list but to me nintendo is in its own category since to them it isn't about graphics but the actual quality of the games that are being made and nintendo really isn't a big console player anymore. Yeah, the wii was a big hit and they made a ton of money off of it but for 2014 they are the kings of the handheld gaming market. Plus, 2014 will be a good year for the Wii U with all the great games coming out for it. With the new smash bros coming out for Wii U and 3DS driving up sales for both the Wii U and 3DS.

I dont view steamboxes as console competitors at all, and I don't see the value proposition tbh. I will say however, I do agree with your point that they will make some sales because many won't understand that steam is available elsewhere. In fact, I think they're banking on that.

I don't think they are banking on that and it is a console competitor. The steamboxes are x100 better than the consoles but to the average person they will just see them as consoles so they will be competing with the xbone and PS4. why get a $400-$500 dollar system that will have tech that will be outdated in 2 years when you can get a more expensive console that will last 5 years depending on what you get and can be upgraded like a PC?
