a $2m sequel to a $50m game? I'm not holding my breath. Shit needs proper funding and support.

Kickstarter at this level is just a demonstration of demand. It's simply saying to potential investors 'hey look people want this game to the tune of $2m in 24 hours.' Then when they get that demonstration of interest they get their funding.

Has that been confirmed? Because so far I believe that's just speculation.

Okay but let's just say it is actually going to be financially backed by Sony. And let's assume the kickstarter gets its capped $5m amount... that's still what, $45m for Sony to back, to potentially get a similar quality game? That's not taking inflation into account.

Son'y shares have been scraping the floor for fifteen years now and I honestly don't think they have the backing to fund all of that. And it's gonna be developed in Tokyo too, apparently. That's gonna be expensive!

I'd love for Shenmue 3 to be everything everyone is expecting but I think it's dead in the water. Perhaps they could revamp the first game to test the water, as no one now is gonna be able to transfer their save file over, which was half the fun.

Call me an old and pessimistic if you want, but I don't this is a good idea. I think they're more than happy to say the name of the game to get people buzzed but I'm not convinced it can be pulled off, and people should leave it alone now. It's been too long, too, for a direct sequel.

Contributed $300, and would have done more if I had the cash.

One thing people forget about the first 2 Shenmue games is that they weren't exactly all that huge, in terms of overall world size. The big draw was the story and the attention to detail, and those are two things they can pull off with a smaller budget.

Also, comparing the original's budget to what this would need doesn't necessarily work. The original was in development on the Saturn for quite some time before being completely reworked for the Dreamcast. Using Unreal 4, and making the game with the same mechanics/style as the original would dramatically reduce cost.

Also, they confirmed that US voices are going to use the original guy, so they're clearly not going for a current-gen quality voice cast. Gonna save a ton that way too.

The original games cost so much because they were ahead of their time. Making a similar game today would be considered somewhat outdated. Honestly, that's what I'm hoping for. I don't want the mechanics and style to change so much to try to keep up with current games. I want it to keep being Shenmue.

That said, Shenmue is essentially the ONLY series to ever use QTE's properly. It was very rarely "Press X to not die", and messing up on one rarely meant you had to do it again. If they fuck up the QTE's, I'll be pissed.

That said, I think this'll be the last that we'll see of Shenmue. Yes, it had a record setting kickstarter, but that is what it is. Those backers aren't going to translate into sales. They're already getting the game for backing, and almost anyone who wanted the game backed it on kickstarter. You're going to most likely see a game with mediocre reviews critically, loved by the fans, and ignored by everyone else.

I can see the headline now:

"Shenmue III sells 27 copies in first week! GREATEST FLOP OF ALL TIME!"

Oh well. I get Shenmue III, so I'm stoked.
