I take it back. February - not January - seems to be the most boring month for gaming so far. Last month had Little Big Planet 2, not to mention the new arrival in the Blokeh household on the 20th, but February is just... well, dull!
Apologies for the late posting of this - what with last month being one mental clusterfuck of activity I just got around to sitting down to it. Enjoy.
1st 1982 - Coleco signs a contract with Nintendo for exclusive rights to home and table-top conversions of Donkey Kong. 1990 - Nintendo ships Super Mario Bros 3 for the NES in the US. It becomes the best-selling video game of all time, grossing US$500 million, selling 17.28 million cartridges. 2000 - Sega releases Crazy Taxi for the Dreamcast in the US.
4th 2001 - Nintendo releases Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64 in the US. 2002 - Sega releases Sonic Advance for the Game Boy Advance in the US. This is the first Sonic title on any Nintendo system, the first of two Sonic games released on Nintendo systems this month alone.
5th 2003 - Nokia unveils the N-Gage handheld gaming device in London, England, and Sydney, Australia. It features a game console with games on MultiMedia Cards, cell phone, wireless connectivity, web browser, audio player, email support, and stereo FM radio. The unit is to be on sale by the end of the year. And it remains, 8 years later, as one of the most innovative, unappreciated, marvellous pieces of kit ever to see the light of day. Fr srs. I still have mine, in fully working order, and its shit hot. King Of Fighters played over Bluetooth in a pub is frigging win. And Pocket Kingdoms was a fucking amazing game. Haters gonna hate.
8th 1982 - Council of Bradley, Illinois, bars children under 16 from playing video arcade games.
9th 1982 - The Boston suburb of Marlborough, Massachusettes, passes an ordinance barring the use of video games by anyone under age 18 during school class hours or late at night, and bans placement of the games within 1500 feet of public schools. 2004 - Square Enix releases Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for the GameCube in the US.
10th 1988 - In Japan, Enix releases Dragon Quest III for the Famicom. About 3.4 million copies are sold. 1997 - Nintendo releases Mario Kart 64 for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
1th 1990 - Enix releases Dragon Quest IV for the Famicom in Japan. On the first day in stores, 1.3 million copies are sold for about US$75 each. 1999 - Square releases Final Fantasy VIII for the PlayStation in Japan. Opening day sales: 2.21 million copies for 17.2 billion yen (about US$145 million). Total worldwide sales over its lifetime: 7.4 million.
12th 2002 - Following the release of Sonic Advance 8 days previous, Sega releases Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the GameCube and PlayStation 2 in the US.
13th 2003 - Capcom releases Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for the Xbox in the US.
14th 2003 - Nintendo releases the Game Boy Advance SP in Japan.
16th 2001 - Square releases Final Fantasy IX for the PlayStation in Europe.
17th 1999 - Sony Computer Entertainment America releases the Syphon Filter video game for the PlayStation in the US. Over one million copies are sold in under a year. 2009 - Capcom releases Street Fighter IV for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
21st 1986 - In Japan, Nintendo releases the Disk System for the Famicom. The system is a 128-kB disk drive to run software; disks can be rewritten with new games at special vending machines. Price of the Disk System is about US$100. In a move rarely seen since, Nintendo released one of its own games - The Legend of Zelda - on the Famicom Disk System as a release title.
22nd 2002 - In Japan, Microsoft releases the Xbox. Release titles include PGR, Silent Hill 2, Dead Or Alive 3, Genma Onimusha and Jet Set Radio Future.
26th 1998 - Sony releases PlayStation memory cards in black, candy orange, cherry red, crystal, emerald, gray, island blue, and lemon yellow. 2002 - Sony announces it is releasing a new line of discounted "Greatest hits" titles for the PlayStation 2 for US$25 each. Titles are eligible when they have been out for eight months and have sold over 400,000 copies.
27th 1996 - Nintendo releases the Pocket Monsters - Green Version and Pocket Monsters - Red Version video games for Game Boy in Japan. And so it began... 2009 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases Killzone 2 for the PlayStation 3 in the USA.
