Summer is always slow in the world of gaming...

1st
1983 - Cinematronics releases Dragon's Lair to arcade centers. It is the first laser-disc based coin-operated arcade game. Cost per play is 50-cents. Advanced Microcomputer Systems designed the game, with animation provided by Don Bluth Animations. Cost to purchase a machine is about US$5500.
1999 - Nintendo releases Pokemon Snap for the Nintendo Sixty FOOOOOOUUUUUURRRRRR in North America.

3rd
1999 - In Weirs Beach, New Hampshire, over six hours Billy Mitchell plays a "perfect" game of the arcade game Pac-Man, achieving the highest score that the game allows: 3,333,360. This can only be accomplished by guiding Pac-Man to eat every dot, fruit, and ghost in all 256 levels without dying.

7th
2000 - Sony release the PSone in Japan, which is basically a smaller, lighter, more compact version of the PS1.

8th
1995 - Sega release the Saturn in Europe. Complete with Virtua Fighter, it sells for £399.99.

10th
1992 - Capcom release a little-known game called Street Fighter II on the SNES in North America. It does alright.

12th
1990 - Struggling software company Square release a game called Final Fantasy in North America. It does alright.
2002 - Bandai releases the Swan Crystal Color handheld in Japan.

13th
1984 - Universal Pictures releases the film "The Last Starfighter". If you haven't seen it yet, then I strongly suggest watching it at the earliest opportunity. Don't even argue, just do it.

15th
1983 - In Japan, Nintendo release a little-known videogame system called the "Famicom", short for "Family Computer". 500,000 units sell in the first two months. Day one titles include Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, and Popeye.
2003 - LucasArts release Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic for the Xbox in North America.
2004 - Microsoft celebrates its 1,000,000th subscriber.

16th
1985 - James Vollandt plays Joust for over 67 hours on one coin, (with four 20-minute breaks) a world record for any arcade video game. His record high score is 107,216,700.

19th
2001 - Square releases FFX for the PS2 in Japan. 2,500,000 copies sell in the first year. Joey came buckets.

21st
1982 - Atari signs a deal to make a video game based on the film "E.T. the Extraterrestrial". Anyone know how that worked out?

27th
2004 - Nokia release the NGage QD, which was an uglier version of its beautiful big brother, and had less features. Needless to say, it didn't do too well.

29th
2008 - Soul Calibur IV on PS3 and 360 anyone?

30th
2001 - Nintendo releases Pokemon Crystal for the GBC in North America.

Love this movie. Couldn't understand why it was here at first but then remembered the whole reason Alex was picked.
