Windows provides a stable operating system, which adapts to your needs. It's a hard balance to acheive, and they still have a long was to go, but from this perspective, there are few, if any, that do this at the same level as Windows. Be it XP or Vista.
Ubuntu manages all of that. It was 3D effects. Installing stuff is as simple as typing in a search and making one click. Yet still it has a real terminal, unlike Windows. It's Linux so you can do whatever you want. It's extremely powerful, but it's also very easy to use. On most PCs, the drivers will be installed automatically. Everything is kept basic as far as the GUI goes.
Thing is, you can get a distro that has it all.
(I've always wanted to say that)
