Before we begin, if you have already played this game on the PS2, Xbox or Xbox 360 and you DIDN'T enjoy it, then you might want to leave now. However, if you played it before and you DID enjoy it, then read on, for there are some new surprises....

The game is essentially, in almost every single way, identical to the previous versions, with graphics akin to the PS2 version which, let's face it, looked darned sweet. So that's a good start. You've still got all the signature music and sound effects which were top notch in the first place, and at first glance you could think you've just wasted £40.

But wait, there's more.

The control method is a joy to behold. Using both Wiimote and Nunchuk, you utilise them is a number of ways to grab, batter, smash, shoot, strangle, throw and pretty much destroy anyone and anything that gets in your way by actually recreating the relevent movement. Holding the Z button locks on to an opponent and a further press of the B button grabs your victim. Already you feel like you've REALLY grabbed someone. A flick forward of either hand results is a swift jab to the chops. Sweeping your right hand to the left and vice versa will deliver a satisfying roundhouse, and best of all.... jerk both controllers back and you give your opponent a face full of forehead. Pure awesome.

As for shooting, this too has been completely overhauled. In this version, you can keep every single weapon you pick up, so you're not just limited to one big gun and one small gun. Oh no. Keep everything. Anyway, hold the C button down, and select your firearm. Lock onto someone with the Z button, and the targetting reticule appears over your opponent. Aim the Wiimote at the TV and you can aim at various body parts with ease, so kneecapping a Barzini gangster before giving him another hole in the head to breathe through is a piece of cake. But that's not all. EA have given us another little gem.

Press the + button, and you enter free-aim mode. All this is is "aim the Wiimote at the telly and blast away". Yes folks, proper free-aiming, just like you'd expect in a game like this. This can make some gunfights that much easier by switching between a gangster and the petrol tank on his car in a split second. Pure genius.

The story is also exactly the same as previous versions, but with subtle differences. Your character no longer begins getting a beating down an alley, but on some rooftop. When Luca turns up and helps you out, you get a bodyguard to escort you around town and protect you from any misgivings from the other families. And that's just the first of the Wii-specific extras.

Going on a mission, but think you might need a bit of extra muscle? Then hire up to 4 bodyguards to go with you. They'll cover your ass while you're garotting some mob punk, then shoot at tailing cars while you haul ass back to base. They cost money though, and you'll have cash taken from you automatically every day they're active, but by the time you get the option to hire them, you'll be so loaded you won't even notice.

Another extra is the RPG-style progression, which while cool isn't as cool as it sounds. All this is is a little extra section on the "Increase Stats" screen. You earn Mob Points which are separate to Respect Points, and you use these to either increase your affection for violence, or you can increase your powers of persuasion, meaning when you go to extort someone you can either do it through sheer muscle or just talk them into it, making your character that little bit more customisable.

The last additions are the extra coumpounds, hubs, hits, and the city itself has been rejigged so that you don't hit dead ends as much as you used to which is a godsend for all those who used to end up facing a brick wall with half the Stracchi family right behind you....

As mentioned before, the control method is just fantastic, and I'd be inclined to say this is both the best incarnation of The Godfather released and also the best use of the Wiimote and Nunchuk. EA have pulled out all the stops with this game and it really shows. This game SHOULD sell by the frigload but I'm guessing it won't. People will complain that it's been out on other platforms for ages and everyone's beaten it, but believe me when I say that this Wii version is THE way to play The Godfather.

When the Don said that he would make you an offer you couldn't refuse, he offered to give you the most satisfying Godfather experience you could ever wish for. And like the Don always did, he has delivered.

Buy this game. Now.
