So while gil isn't exactly growing on trees in Eorzea, it is there to be made provided you want to invest time in it.

One of the most surefire ways to make gil is to learn how to convert items into materia, and then sell the materia. I can make several thousand for just one materia, and I currently have a Quicktongue II Materia (increases spell speed) for just over 10k.

Other methods include crafting ingots. If you want to increase your craft level, then you will want to craft things manually, as you get around 3x the experience, but it takes much longer.

If you just want gil, then use the auto-synth to mass produce at great speed, but at the expense of experience. Oftentimes its worth splashing out a few grand on the items needed to craft ingots, as the money you make back is usually more than you spend.

For instance, I just spent 12000 gil buying ice shards, bomb ash and iron ores, then used my Armorer to craft 300 steel ingots. I'm now selling them in stacks of 50 for 7250 gil a stack.

6 x 7250 gil = 43500 gil total- 12000 gil outlay = 31500 gil profit.

They don't sell instantly, but left overnight, your retainers will empty their inventories and fill their coffers.

At this rate, we'll have houses in no time. :)
