The New Land of Free Speech.

In 1984 (the year not the book) the British government passed the Video Recordings Act. The law was related to any media and meant any individual or retailer could be punished for supplying age-restricted materials to an underage individual.

Britain however is part of the European Union, and that means for the act to become law they have to submit the proper papers to the EU. They didn’t and that in effect means the Act has never actually been law.

The implications of this bureaucratic screw up? Well in the long term very little. Individuals who have already been sentenced under the act will still have to serve their penalty with no reduction of jail time or fine and with emergency legislation already in the process of being forced through it will soon be back to business as usual.

Until then though if you are under eighteen and live in the UK you have a limited window of opportunity to buy any game or DVD you want. So I guess it may be time to pick up Manhunt 2 (I wouldn’t recommend it though, it isn’t very good.)
